If you have loss of bladder/bowel control, saddle anesthesia, or bilateral leg weakness — go to the emergency department immediately. Do not use this guide. Red flags →
Step 1 — What's your situation?
Quick rule of thumb
- → New pain without red flags: start with primary care or PM&R.
- → Progressive neurologic symptoms (weakness, gait instability): start with a spine surgeon.
- → Chronic pain not responding to PT: pain management specialist.
- → Considering surgery: a second surgical opinion is always appropriate.
